Tom Malinowski (D-NJ-07)

Tom Malinowski, an American diplomat, is running for Congress to represent the state of New Jersey in the 7thdistrict. He won the Democratic primary on June 5, defeating two other candidates. Now, he will face the incumbent, Leonard Lance, in the November 6 general elections.

 

Background and Achievements

Tom Malinowski was born in Poland, and he immigrated to the United States at the age of 6 to escape Communism. He was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from University of California, Berkeley. He attended Oxford University to receive his Master’s in philosophy, and he was a Rhodes Scholar. For 12 years, he was the Washington Director for the Human Rights Watch, where he campaigned for democratic reform and women’s rights recognition. Most recently, he was the Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor during the Obama Administration.
