Sylvia Garcia is running to be the next Representative from Texas’ 29th district. The incumbent, Gene Green is retiring following his term. A safely Democratic district located outside Houston, Sylvia is expected to win her election.

Background and Achievements

Currently a member of the Texas State Senate, Sylvia Garcia knows the state and area incredibly well. Sylvia is a lifelong Texan: she is a graduate of Texas Woman’s University and later Texas Southern University, where she received her JD. In 1998, Sylvia became Houston’s city controller following her term as a presiding judge of the city. She later was elected to the Harris County Commissioner’s Court in 2002 and the State Senate in 2013. Sylvia is incredibly popular in Houston, having represented NASA and the Port of Houston while on the Commissioner’s Court.
