Carolyn Maloney seeks reelection in New York’s 14th District.
Carolyn Maloney (D) is running for reelection for her 10th term in New York’s 14th District. She faces a primary race.
Representative Maloney has been an incredible advocate for women during her 8 terms are representative for New York’s 14th District. In addition to being the first female chair of the Ways and Means Committee, Maloney has helped author and pass numerous bills helping women and children and has fought to keep women’s rights in tact. She also has worked hard to keep big business accountable and protect consumers. It’s critical that we help to assure that this strong feminist leader remains in Congress.
Background:
- Elected as Representative to NY-14 in 1992, and has been re-elected 8 times
- Elected to the New York City Council in 1982, and served for 10 years
- Supported the interests of Planned Parenthood 100 percent in 2008
- Currently serves on the Financial Services Committee, Government Reform Committee, and as the Chairperson of the Joint Economic Committee
- Since being elected in 1992, Congresswoman Maloney has helped to pass:
- the Family and Medical Leave Act,
- the Violence Against Women Act,
- laws increasing law enforcement training,
- the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights,
- and The Contractors and Federal Spending Accountability Act
- She has been a fierce advocate for women’s and children’s rights in the House.
Maloney’s Position on Key Issues:
- Women’s Rights: Congresswoman Maloney has been a tremendous advocate for women’s rights during her time in Congress. She has passed The Debbie Smith Act, The End Demand for Sex Trafficking Act, Legislation to provide annual mammograms for women on Medicare, and the Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act in the House.
- Reproductive Rights: Congresswoman Maloney supports a woman’s right to choose, without restrictions.
- LGBT Rights: Supports marriage equality.
Primary Opponent:
- Reshma Saujani (D): attorney, hedge fund manager
Prospects: Maloney has a large fundraising advantage over Saujani and has a well-earned strong reputation in her district. Rep. Maloney easily won her election in 2008 with 80% of the vote. Although she is popular in her district, we must work to ensure that we keep feminist leader Carolyn Maloney in Congress.
