Mary Jo Kilroy

 

Background:
Elected to the Franklin County Commission in 2000, Kilroy has served as its President since 2007. She served as a Columbus School Board member for 8 years. Kilroy has helped earn her county an “AAA” assessment by Moody and Standard Poor’s, as well as the coveted Governing magazine’s rating as one of the top five counties in the US. She has been active in civil rights, feminism, and anti-war campaigns, and has served as a Vista Volunteer. She has a B.A from Cleveland State University and a JD from Ohio State University.

Positions on Key Issues:

  • Supports: Reproductive Rights, Full funding of reproductive services by health insurance programs, Expansion of healthcare access; requiring county contractors to provide employee healthcare coverage; incentives for small businesses, Expanding the Children’s Health Insurance Program to individuals 18 and under, Negotiating environmental laws and worker’s rights in trade agreements, Stricter enforcement of civil rights laws; increasing funding for EEOC and the Justice Department
  • Opposes:Iraq war, The Global Gag Rule, Legislation that dismantles Roe v. Wade, Proliferation of nuclear weapons

Prospects:
Excellent. Last election Kilroy nearly unseated then 7-term incumbent Deborah Pryce, losing by only 1,055 votes. The district was considered a toss-up, but with Pryce out of the race, Kilroy is considered the odds on favorite.
