Lois Herr is running for Congress in PA-16

Lois Herr is running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 16th District.  She faces a general election race.

Herr is running against Joe Pitts, an anti-abortion Republican with a track record of voting against women’s rights.  Pitts was a co-author of the Stupak-Pitts amendment, which Herr called "a direct attack on the freedom and privacy of American women."  Herr has been a longtime advocate for women and supports constitutional equality and equal pay.  Once Herr is elected, she will serve as an outstanding advocate for women and families and will work to fix our economy and create jobs.

Background:

  • Won the Democratic Party’s nomination in 2004 and 2006 in PA-16
  • Worked for 26 years in the telecommunications industry
  • Under President Ford, she worked in the Office of Management and Budget as part of the President's Executive Inter-exchange Program
  • Since 1993, Herr has worked for Elizabethtown College as a teacher, senior-level administrator, and Scholar-in-Residence
  • She was a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention
  • Herr serves as an elected local committee leader for the Democratic Party and member of the State Democratic Party Committee.
  • During 2006-07 Herr was the Executive Director of the Lancaster County Democratic Committee

Herr’s Position on Key Issues:

  • Women’s Rights: Supports constitutional equality, equal pay, and affirmative action
  • Reproductive Rights: Supports a woman’s right to choose without restrictions
  • LGBT Rights: Supports marriage equality

General Election Opponent:

  • Joe Pitts (R): incumbent, coauthor of the Stupak-Pitt’s amendment to the health care bill, which would limit abortion access for women.  Pitts also supported nearly all of Bush’s policies and is the chair of the Republican Values Action Team, which organizes Republican policy with the religious right.  Pitts has also been tied to The Family, a religious and political organization in Washington, DC that has been plagued with corruption and filled with scandal.

Prospects: Herr has tried before to beat Pitts, but this time, she is determined to give Pitts an incredibly tough challenge.  Pitts lost some support because of his attempt to derail healthcare with the Stupak-Pitts amendment, and Herr stands a good chance of beating Pitts.  We must stand behind this strong feminist leader and ensure that she replaces Pitts as the Pennsylvania’s Representative from the 16th district.
