Robin Carnahan (D) is running for an open Senate seat in Missouri.  She faces a general election race.

Robin Carnahan is running for an open Senate seat in Missouri against current Congressman Roy Blunt.  Carnahan is a strong feminist, while Blunt has never voted in support of women.  Blunt has been a Washington insider for many years, and has been embroiled in scandal since his first election in 1997.  He has been tied to lobbyist Jack Abramoff and other corrupt Washington politicos like Tom Delay.  Carnahan would serve as a new advocate for Missourians in the Senate and would continue to fight for women’s rights.

Background:

• Currently serves as Secretary of State for Missouri
• Runs her family’s 900 acre farm
• After receiving her J.D. from the University of Virginia, Carnahan specialized in business and corporate law at a major Missouri law firm;
• Served at the Export-Import Bank of the United States;
• In 2005, Carnahan was selected as one of only 20 government leaders chosen for their ability to work across party lines to accomplish goals;
• In 2008 Carnahan served as co-chair of the Elections Committee for the bi-partisan National Association of Secretaries of State

Carnahan’s Position on Key Issues:

• Reproductive Rights: Carnahan supports a woman’s right to choose.
• LGBT Rights: Supports civil unions.
• Health care: Supports health care reform to ensure that everyone has access to affordable, reliable care.

General Election Opponent:

• Roy Blunt (R) – current Congressman from Missouri’s 7th district and serves as House Minority Whip. Blunt is a conservative Republican with ties to lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Prospects:  Carnahan and Blunt are neck and neck in the polls right now.  Carnahan has been an incredible fundraiser, but Blunt’s DC ties have given him a slight lead in fundraising.  Carnahan comes from a well-known political family in Missouri, and her name recognition will help her in the election.  Missouri has slowly been more willing to elect  Democrats to office.  Current  Democrats Senator Claire McCaskill and Governor Jay Nixon are popular and their elections provide momentum that  can benefit Carnahan.
