Barbara Boxer (D) is running for re-election for Senate in California.

Barbara Boxer

Barbara Boxer (D) is running for re-election for Senate in California.  She faces a general election race.

Senator Barabara Boxer was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 and to the Senate in 1992.  During her tenure, Senator Boxer has been a tireless advocate for women’s rights, writing and pushing legislation through the Senate that has benefited women.  Senator Boxer has been the leader on women’s issues, and has worked on a wide range of women’s issues.

Senator Boxer faces a strong challenge from the Republicans, most likely either Carly Fiorina or Tom Campbell.  Both Republicans have access to significant funding, because the Republican Party is targeting Sen. Boxer.  We must work hard to keep Senator Boxer in office.  We can not lose our best advocate and ally in the Senate.

Background:

  • Elected to the House of Representatives in 1982.
  • Elected to the Senate in 1992, making California the first state with two female senators (in addition to Senator Diane Feinstein).
  • In 2004, Senator Boxer was re-elected with 6.9 million votes, the highest vote total for any Senate candidate in U.S. history.
  • Chair of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the Senate Ethics Committee, making her the only Senator to chair two committees.
  • For the Foreign Relations Committee, Boxer chairs the Subcommittee on International Operations and Organizations, Human Rights, Democracy and Global Women’s Issue

Boxer’s Position on Key Issues:

  • Senator Boxer is the major leader in the Senate on all women’s rights issues, especially the leader on pro-choice issues.
  • Reproductive Health and Rights:  Chief sponsor of Freedom of Choice Act
  • Healthcare: Supports reform, and signed a petition to include a public option in any comprehensive health care reform.
  • Violence Against Women: While a member of the House, Boxer co-sponsored the Violence Against Women Act.
  • Voted against Iraq War.
  • LGBT Rights: Support marriage equality and is a co-sponsor of ENDA legislation, and  Supports overturning “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
  • Environment: Senator Boxer managed the 2008 comprehensive climate change bill and the Senator also wrote the 2007 law requiring federal buildings to use technologies that reduce energy use and global warming pollution.
  • Global leader for women and children.

Prospects: Both Fiorina and Campbell have the ability to fundraise large amounts of money. Fiorina is a former Hewlett-Packard CEO and brings a large rolodex of large donors to her campaign. Boxer is among the highest targed Senators by the Republican party, so she needs our help to be re-elected.

General Election Opponents:

  • Carly Fiorina (R) --  former Hewlett-Packard CEO, with a large net of potential donors and an ability to self-fund part of her campaign.
  • Tom Campbell (R) -- former U.S. Representative and 2000 Senate candidate

Other Endorsements: EMILY's List, NWPC, WCF
